New Year, Same Me

I don’t really do new year’s resolutions — but I do like to look back & see what can positively change.

As a rule, my business usually slows down over the holidays. And because I am insane, I love being busy and am very much a “project person.”

I like to have projects I’m working on. For the last few months, my big project outside of my client work was writing and publishing my third book, which took up time, kept me feeling creative and satisfied, and also moves my business forward — the best of all worlds!

In December, as work was slowing down, I wrote about this same topic and how I created new projects to focus on for work.

But it applies to my regular life, too. When I’m bored, I’ll find something to do, like redoing something in my house, looking for a new hobby (I learned how to crochet from one of these times!), look for new volunteer opportunities, find a new author I’ve never heard of to read, or anything I can think of!

I don’t really do new year’s resolutions — but I do like to look back at the previous year and see how I can make good changes for the coming year.

2019 was a crazy year for me.

It was at once both the hardest and most creatively fulfilling year of my life. On the personal side, I spent 8 months going through unsuccessful round after round of IVF, which depleted me in every way: physically, mentally, and emotionally. On the creative side, I wrote my best book yet, expanded my editing work, had my best single month ever in business.

After a very rocky start, I made more money than I thought I would be able to this year.

In the first 6 months of 2019, I was dealing with A LOT and made the least amount of money I EVER have in my freelancing career — only $18k in 6 months. It was difficult for me, because while I don’t define my personal success with money, I do define my business’s success with money and number of clients.

But I turned it around! In the second half of 2019, I kicked my butt in gear, marketed, kicked butt, edited a bunch of books, found great new clients, and ended the year making just over what I made last year!

What is next in 2020?

I don’t have forecasting or a specific business plan stretching into the future; I prefer to have general goals, plans, and ideas and see where the year takes me.

But in 2020, I plan to do more book editing, restart my very cool How to Write A Book in 3 Months class, and finish writing and launch my next book, the second volume of You Are Not Alone. It was a book I put together in the wake of the #metoo movement, and it is important. The feedback was so positive and amazing that my publisher wants a second one — and I have the stories to do it.

So, 2020 will be awesome!
