I just received the following, all over the last week:
- $29.54: my very first CreateSpace royalty check.
- $66.02: my first Amazon ebook royalty check.
- $17.20: my very first Medium payment through the partner program.
None of these amounts are making or breaking my business and none of them are going to change my life.
But still, they matter. A lot.
My first royalty checks from my first book and the first time I was invited to write for money on my favorite blogging site.
This money — it is all driven by readers. People who read my book, people who read my posts and thought they were good enough, valuable enough, to applaud me, which is how paid posts earn money, based on claps.
It is a small amount of money overall.
It makes a huge, massive difference to me.
Writing is who I am. But taking the leap of faith to be a paid writer and turn this into a career has been the greatest and scariest thing I’ve ever done, and it continues to pay off every day.
I’ve been solvent and profitable since the beginning, but the validation of knowing that stranger read and enjoy my work never gets old.
And I truly don’t think it ever will.
