I agree with you that a portfolio site is not necessary. I’m a full-time writer and editor and I get so many new or aspiring writers asking me what they should use for a portfolio, but they DON’T NEED ONE. If you have a blog or published articles, or even just unpublished writing samples, you’re good. Prospective clients really don’t care about a portfolio site, they just want to see samples of your writing to make sure they like your style and that you know what you’re doing. I feel that making an entire portfolio site — especially for people who take on unpaid work just to build one — is completely unnecessary! Save your skills for people willing to pay for them. As a freelancer, I define my own value.
