I actually like both ways to publish, as I have different goals in the books that are self-published than the ones that are trade published. I am in contract with my publisher for the second volume of You Are Not Alone, which is a better fit for a trade publisher and more relevant and timely, but I am also already writing my next business-related nonfiction book, which I plan to self-publish, as that is more in line with my professional goals for that book (my first nonfic, Write. Get Paid. Repeat. was/is self-published, as well).

I love and respect all forms of publishing and getting your work out in the world. However, I agree with you that many self-published authors do not seem to take it seriously enough and don’t get professional editing done and a pro cover designed and proper formatting. For me, I take it VERY seriously and use all pro services to make sure my self-published books are high quality and not any sort of implied throwaway. If anyone plans to self-publish, they need to allot money for the professional services required to make it a good book.

I liked working with the trade publisher, too! I just think my publishing options have to align with the goals I want to accomplish with my books.
