I’ve written before about how freelance writers don’t need to have a niche, why I choose not to have one, and how it works for me.
Nonetheless, many writers do choose to niche down and that is 100% okay. You do you!
However, more and more lately I’ve seen questions about how to switch from one niche to another — especially if all your experience is in one or two specific topics or industries.
I can help! It’s actually a lot simpler than you may think.
Trust me, we all overthink things, and switching from a topic you have tons of experience in to one you may not have any professional experience is can be scary. And hey, it’s easy to overthink almost everything when you’re a freelancer and doing everything yourself.
So, I do not have a niche. I am a generalist, so I write for a ton of different industries, everything from home remodeling to building websites to cryptocurrency to cannabis and more. I DO specialize in nonfiction, both in writing and when editing, though I’ve edited a few novels, too. Most of my writing is marketing copy, articles, and blogs, which are naturally nonfiction. Though one time, I wrote a story for a comic book, which was super cool. So…diverse and non-specific! I love being a generalist and getting such diversity in my projects!
Because I have written for so many industries, I can easily explain to you how to switch niches — even when you have no “professional” experience in them.
How to Switch Your Niche
The way to “switch” niches is to simply have writing samples in your target niche.
So, if you want to write about gardening or politics or parenting or technology, write 2–3 blog posts/articles on the new niche topic and either post them on your blog or hold onto them as PDFs and attach them as samples when you email/message prospective clients in that niche.
Switch your marketing/cold messages from people and companies in your previous niche to those in your new one.
I know this sounds simple — and it really is!
You don’t have to overthink it, even though you have more experience with previous topics. I always tell potential clients in a niche I haven’t written in before “Here are a few writing samples (attached) on Xyz topic and you can see even more of my writing on other topics and industries on my blog at (link).”
It really is that simple!
Not to say that it is easy necessarily. I mean, you still have to take the time to research and write a great article on your new chosen topic.
But the reality (for me, at least) is that a lot of my professional work is ghostwritten, so I can’t use it as samples anyway. Even when I am allowed to, such as not having an NDA or anything in the contract keeping me from doing so, I personally find it is easier to have samples with my name on them.
Want to change niches? Write one or two really good articles in the new industry. Start a free Medium blog and post them there! Put them on your website blog! Keep them on your computer or in Google Drive to attach as samples.
Don’t overthink or overcomplicate. MOST writers who enjoy research can write on pretty much any topic. They simply CHOOSE to stay within a specific topic/niche/field. Maybe because they have a lot of experience or expertise in that field or that is the topic they’ve become known for.
But writing as a skill (and talent) does not discriminate by topic.
And most companies know that. So, if you’re in health and wellness and you want to switch to write more about parenting or technology, do it! You lose nothing by trying!
