From Quora: “How can I get a good content writer who can write about my products…?”

The full question asked was “How can I get a good content writer who can write about my products and explain my work process in a better way? How much do they charge for the same?”

This is a great question and one I see all the time on Quora, Reddit, and other sites.

Here is my answer:

The cost of writing depends on several factors, from type of writing to word count to how much research is involved.

However, here is an example. If you’re looking for a general weekly blogger on more general topics which require SOME research and linking to sources but not much, you are likely going to see those writers asking for 10–12 cents per word. This is a relatively average amount.

The issue becomes value over cost. Many clients want the cheapest possible writer and will hire someone who charges just 2 cents per word and then are unhappy with the quality of the results.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard people say “Ohh, that’s way too expensive. This is easy, I could do it myself!”

But remember — if they were able to do it themselves at a high quality, they would and wouldn’t need to hire a writer. Writers are valuable and writing is a SKILL.

How to find writers:

It’s pretty easy! I’m a writer, check me out on my blog and my website.

You can also post free ads on Craigslist and Reddit (better, in my opinion). On reddit, try r/forhire and r/hireawriter — these threads have many writers and clients posting. I have found writing clients there!

There are also job boards, like ProBlogger, Indeed, and more, on which you can post an ad.

Quality Over Quantity

This is where many people hiring writers for the first time fail. They find a writer who is willing to work for 1 or 2 or 3 cents per word and figure they are getting a great deal. They get 1000 word article for just $20! Who could resist that?

The issue comes in when they receive the article and it is full of errors or typos or isn’t professional quality, or sometimes isn’t the style or tone they wanted. They then need to either spend time editing it and making changes themselves, which defeats the purpose of hiring someone, or have the writer make revisions until it is what they want, which takes more time and money.

It’s the same with purchasing knockoff or cheap products and getting frustrated when the quality isn’t the same as the expensive or name brand version.

Writing well is a skill. Writing is a job for many people.

Like any job, the writer needs to get paid fairly for their work.
